Album Review: Mannequin Pussy “I Got Heaven”
By Delaney Hardekopf
Released on March 1 2024, I Got Heaven by Mannequin Pussy is a potent mixture of intoxicating rage, revelation and renewal. Comprised of Marisa “Missy” Dabice (vocals and guitar), Maxine Steen (guitar), Colins “Bear” Regisford (bass), and Kaleen Reading (drums), the Philadelphia-based band bares a refreshing yet mature sound with 10 songs that leave you craving more.
Missy's vocals glide from soft to intense, carrying us from moments of introspection to rage with punk attention-grabs like “Of Her”, “OK? OK! OK? OK!”, and “Aching”.
The title track sets the stage with swirling melodies and punchy hardcore breaks, showcasing the band's evergreen versatility. The weaponization of Christianity in America is reflected heavily, questioning “You really think I'd wait for the permission? For protection and assurances that all would be delivered?” The record brings you through an emotional rollercoaster featuring fuzzy guitars, atmospheric synths, and relentless yet dreamy vocals.
"I Got Heaven” stands as proof of Mannequin Pussy's remarkable growth, without compromising on passion and sincerity. You can listen to I Got Heaven here on Spotify as well as connect with Mannequin Pussy on Instagram and X.
